THE IMPACT OF FOOD INSECURITY ON THE HEALTH OF AT RISK CHILDREN:
Iron deficiency anemia has negative effects on a child’s mental development and motor development
Calcium deficiency decreases skeletal growth and bone strength leading to osteoporosis later in life
Decreased calories and protein may lead to growth retardation
At risk children with nutritional deficiencies have higher rates of dental cavities
Poor nutrition in children may increase the risks of coronary heart disease in adult years
At risk children tend to have more illnesses
Food insecurity leads to an increased consumption of foods higher in fats and sugars and sets the pattern for adult diseases such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, arthritis, and high cholesterol levels
As the largest hunger relief charity in the Metrolina area, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina works to end hunger. We do this by supplying a network of over 600 non-profit agencies and churches in 19 counties with food and essential grocery products.
