Second Helping was designed by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to serve our most vulnerable citizens---the homebound elderly. There are 40,000 people over 65, representing 15% of the elderly population, living at risk of hunger in the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina service area. The program provides monthly boxes of supplemental nutritious food to older seniors through partner agencies that already provide Meals on Wheels programs.
Second Helping supplements the daily nutritious meal received through these programs with supplies of easy to open nutritional items such as pull top tuna, soups, pudding and fruit, beef stew and similar items. The program currently serves Cabarrus, Lancaster, Lincoln, Union (NC) and York counties on a monthly basis. SHFBM plans to expand this program into additional counties in 2008-2009.
